1. Top 3 Highlights of Byodoin Temple

① Phoenix Hall (Phoenix Pavilion)

Floating on an island in the middle of Aji-ike Pond, this wooden hall resembles a bird taking flight. Crowned with two golden phoenix statues on its roof, its symmetry casts a magnificent reflection on the water.

② Amida Nyorai Statue by Jocho (National Treasure)

Seated inside the main hall is a 3-meter tall gilded statue of Amida Buddha. Sculpted by master craftsman Jocho, it is the only surviving confirmed work by the artist and a masterpiece of Heian sculpture.

③ Hosokan Museum

This state-of-the-art underground museum houses National Treasures including 26 “Unchu Kuyo Bosatsu” (Praying Bodhisattvas on Clouds) statues and the original golden roof phoenixes displayed under museum lighting.
