Discover Eikando Temple: Kyoto’s Famous “Autumn Leaves Temple”
Located near the Philosopher’s Path in eastern Kyoto, Eikando Temple (永観堂), officially known as Zenrin-ji, is the head temple of the Seizan Zenrin-ji sect of Jodo Buddhism.
Founded in the early 9th century, Eikando has been celebrated for over a millennium as one of Kyoto’s premier autumn foliage spots, inspiring ancient poets with its breathtaking seasonal red maples.

- Mikaeri Amida (Looking-Back Buddha): The temple’s unique principal statue of Amida Buddha, famous for turning its head over its left shoulder as if looking back to guide followers.
- Hojo-chi Pond & Nishikikumo Bridge: A picturesque pond surrounded by nearly 3,000 vibrant maple trees. The red vermilion bridge reflecting on the mirror-like water is an iconic Kyoto view.

Magical Autumn Night Illuminations
From early November to early December, Eikando holds its world-renowned **Autumn Night Special Viewing**.
The entire garden and its 3,000 maple trees are illuminated by warm spotlights, creating a fairytale reflection of glowing red leaves across Hojo-chi Pond that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Eikando is conveniently situated right next to Nanzen-ji Temple and the southern end of the Philosopher’s Path.

- Access: A 15-minute walk from Keage Station on the Tozai Subway Line, or a 3-minute walk from the “Nanzenji Eikando-do” bus stop.
