A Serene Green World: The Moss Garden of Saihoji Temple
Saihoji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in western Kyoto, is affectionally known worldwide as “Kokedera” (The Moss Temple). The entire temple grounds are blanketed in a lush carpet of over 120 varieties of vibrant green moss, creating an ethereal and peaceful atmosphere.
Restored in the 14th century by the famous Zen master Muso Soseki, the garden features a two-tiered design: a lower stroll garden centered around the Golden Pond (Ogonchi) and an upper dry landscape (Karesansui) garden.
Highlights and Best Seasons to Visit
- The Rainy Season Magic (June–July): The garden reaches its peak beauty during the summer rainy season, when fresh rainfall causes the moss to glow in brilliant shades of green.
- Golden Pond & Strolling Path: The lower garden path circles the “Heart”-shaped pond, offering tranquil reflections and striking natural shades of green.
- Sutra Copying Experience: Before walking through the garden, visitors participate in a quiet Zen practice (copying Buddhist scriptures or chanting), preparing the mind for peaceful contemplation.
