Masterpieces of Momoyama Culture: Tekisuien & Kokei-no-Niwa Gardens
Located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nishi Hongwanji Temple in central Kyoto, “Tekisuien” and “Kokei-no-Niwa” are designated together as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
Tekisuien is a pond-stroll garden centered around the National Treasure **Hiunkaku Pavilion**—celebrated alongside the Golden and Silver Pavilions as one of “Kyoto’s Three Great Pavilions.” Meanwhile, Kokei-no-Niwa is a grand dry landscape (Karesansui) garden in front of the Great Shoin hall, evoking the dramatic cliffs of China’s Mount Lu.

- The Asymmetrical Beauty of Hiunkaku: The three-story wooden pavilion features an elegant, asymmetrical design whose delicate silhouette reflects gracefully in the waters of Tekisuien Pond.
- Dynamic Rock Arrangements of Kokei-no-Niwa: Massive stones are arranged to symbolize a dry waterfall cascading down mountain ravines into a river of raked gravel, inspired by the famous Chinese tale “Three Laughers at Tiger Glen.”

Visitor Information & Access
Note: While the main grounds of Nishi Hongwanji are open daily, Tekisuien and the Great Shoin interior/gardens are generally opened for special public viewing events or guided tours.
