Serenity in Stone: The Famous Rock Garden of Ryoanji
Ryoanji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyoto, is globally renowned for its iconic Dry Landscape Garden (Karesansui), commonly known as the “Rock Garden.” Measuring about 25 meters from east to west and 10 meters from north to south, the garden features 15 stones arranged artfully amidst raked white gravel.
Intriguingly, the stones are positioned so that from any vantage point on the veranda, at least one stone remains hidden from view—allowing visitors to see only 14 at a time. This design invites quiet contemplation and sparks the imagination.

Visiting early in the morning right after opening is highly recommended to enjoy the serene atmosphere before the crowds arrive.
