A Masterpiece of Warlord Elegance: Sanboin Garden
Located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Daigoji Temple, “Sanboin Garden” is a magnificent Momoyama-period stroll garden personally designed by the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1598 for his grand Cherry Blossom Viewing Party (“Daigo no Hanami”).
Designated as both a Special Historic Site and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, the garden was intricately created to be viewed from the Tatami-matted main reception hall (Omote-shoin).

- The Legendary “Fujito Stone”: Positioned in the center of the garden, this famous rock has been passed down by rulers of Japan since the Muromachi period as a symbol of supreme power.
- Dynamic Three-Tier Waterfall & Islands: Featuring a scenic three-tiered waterfall at the rear and artfully arranged Crane and Turtle islands, the layout reflects the extravagant aesthetic of the Momoyama era.
- View from the National Treasure Hall: Sitting on the veranda of the Omote-shoin hall allows visitors to experience the exact perspective intended for Hideyoshi himself.
Visitor Information & Access
While world-famous for cherry blossoms in spring, visiting in autumn offers spectacular views of vibrant red leaves reflected in the garden pond.
