A Rare Heian Pure Land Masterpiece: Joruriji Garden
Located in the peaceful Tono region of southern Kyoto Prefecture, Joruriji Temple features a magnificent “Pure Land Style” (Jodo-shiki) garden created in 1107 during the late Heian period. Designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, it retains the original layout symbolizing Buddhist paradise.
Centered around a large pond, the garden is uniquely arranged with a Three-Story Pagoda (National Treasure) in the east housing Yakushi Nyorai (Buddha of Healing for the present world), directly facing the Main Hall (National Treasure) in the west housing the Nine Amida Buddhas (representing salvation in the afterlife).

- The East-to-West Spiritual Journey: Standing at the eastern pagoda and looking across the serene pond toward the western hall allows visitors to physically experience the Heian concept of walking from present life toward the Pure Land paradise.
- Japan’s Only Surviving Nine Amida Hall: The Main Hall houses nine wooden statues of Amida Nyorai side by side—the only original Heian-period temple hall of its kind remaining in Japan today.
- Seasonal Splendor: The tranquil pond reflects Japanese pieris (Asebi) in early spring, fresh greenery and lotuses in summer, and brilliant crimson maple leaves in autumn.
Visitor Information & Access
Joruriji is a popular starting point for peaceful hiking trails through the countryside toward nearby Iwafune-ji Temple and ancient stone Buddhas.
