A Natural Wonder of Pines and White Sand: Amanohashidate
Located in Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto Prefecture, “Amanohashidate” (meaning “Bridge to Heaven”) is celebrated as one of “Japan’s Three Scenic Views” alongside Matsushima and Miyajima. Formed over tens of thousands of years, this 3.6-kilometer sandbar is blanketed with around 8,000 pine trees and is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
According to Japanese mythology, Amanohashidate was once a ladder used by the gods to travel between heaven and earth, which collapsed into the sea to form this miraculous landscape.
Highlights and Recommended Viewing Points
- “Matanozoki” (Viewing upside down between your legs): Looking at the sandbar upside down from the observatories on either side makes the pine-covered strip appear like a dragon soaring through the sky (“Flying Dragon View”).
- Walk or Cycle Across the Sandbar: Visitors can walk across the 3.6-km path in about 45 minutes or rent a bicycle (approx. 20 minutes), stopping by Amanohashidate Shrine and Isoshimizu, a natural fresh water spring right beside the saltwater bay.
- Two Distinct Seas: Walking the sandbar allows you to experience Miyazu Bay on one side and the inner Aso Sea on the other.
Visitor Information & Access
Observatory parks offering panoramic views are located on both the south side (Amanohashidate View Land) and north side (Kasamatsu Park), reachable via chairlift or cable car.
