Rokuon-ji Garden, surrounding the world-famous Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), is designated both as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Originally a villa belonging to a noble family, the estate was transformed in the late 14th century by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. He designed the garden to represent the Buddhist concept of Pure Land Paradise on Earth, seamlessly blending lavish Muromachi design with quiet Zen philosophy.
